Recording a lecture is easy. Turning the recording into something you will actually revise from is where it falls apart — most people end up with a 9,000-word wall of text they never open again.
The transcription step takes minutes. What follows matters more.
First: check you are allowed to record
Institutions differ, and so does the law. Many universities require the lecturer’s permission; some grant a blanket right as an accessibility accommodation; a few prohibit it outright. Recording is usually about the lecturer’s performance rights and other students’ privacy, not about you.
Ask once at the start of term. It is a thirty-second conversation that removes the problem permanently.
Two things that go wrong with classroom audio
Distance to the microphone
A phone on your desk is 5–10 metres from the lecturer, pointed at the ceiling, in a room built to reverberate. That is close to the hardest realistic input for a speech model — the voice arrives mixed with its own reflections.
What actually helps, in order:
- Sit closer. The single largest improvement available, and it is free.
- Phone on the desk, not in a bag. Fabric kills high frequencies, which is where consonants live.
- Ask about a lapel recorder or the institution’s own recording. Many lecture halls already capture audio; the official recording is far better than yours.
No amount of model quality compensates for a microphone across the room. This is the variable worth optimising.
Jargon becomes plausible nonsense
Lectures are dense with terms the model may not know — a researcher’s name, a theorem, a drug, a case citation. Whisper does not leave gaps. It substitutes the nearest word it does know, so errors read as confident and grammatical.
In one measured comparison, a model transcribed hyperthyroidism as hypothyroidism — the opposite condition, one letter apart, inside a fluent sentence. That is exactly the error you would carry into an exam without noticing.
The practical defence: before revising from a transcript, skim it against the lecture slides and correct every technical term. Terms cluster — fixing them takes ten minutes and is the difference between notes and misinformation.
What a transcript cannot capture
Worth knowing before you rely on one:
- Anything written and not spoken. Equations, diagrams, code on a slide. If the lecturer says “as you can see here,” the transcript contains only that phrase.
- Emphasis. “This will be on the exam” and a passing remark look identical in text.
- Structure. Slide boundaries and topic changes are invisible.
The fix for all three is the same: photograph the slides as you go, and use the transcript as the narration track alongside them. The pairing is far more useful than either alone.
Turning a transcript into notes
The step people skip. A raw transcript is not notes — it is a searchable record. The conversion is what makes it revisable:
- Skim with the timestamps visible. Mark where each topic starts. Five minutes.
- Extract the claims. Most of a lecture is scaffolding — examples, asides, repetition. The load-bearing content is usually 10–20% of the words.
- Rewrite in your own words. This is the part that produces learning. Copying the transcript into a summary produces neither notes nor memory.
- Keep the full transcript searchable. When something is unclear in week 10, Ctrl+F beats scrubbing an audio file.
Steps 1–3 take about the length of the lecture again. That still beats transcribing by hand, and unlike passive re-listening it involves actually processing the material.
Practical constraints
An hour of lecture audio is a 30–60 MB file. Browser-based transcription handles it without uploading — relevant if the recording contains other students’ questions, or if your institution has a policy about where recordings may be stored.
Processing runs at roughly a quarter to a half of real time on a laptop, so an hour of audio is 15–30 minutes in a background tab. The model downloads once (73 MB for English) and is cached afterwards.
On a phone, expect memory limits before time limits — split long recordings at the break.
Transcribe a lecture — the audio stays on your device, which matters when other students are audible on the recording.
Common questions
Which language should I pick for a lecturer with a strong accent? The language being spoken, not the accent’s origin. A French professor lecturing in English is English. Accent affects accuracy but not language choice.
Can it handle a bilingual lecture? Poorly. One language governs the whole file, so a lecture alternating between two languages will be forced into one. Split the recording at the switches if it matters.
What about lectures in a language other than English? Supported, but accuracy varies a lot by language — check yours before relying on it.
Is it worth transcribing every lecture? Probably not. Transcribe the ones that were dense, fast, or unclear. For a lecture you followed comfortably, your own notes are better.
